Elk Basin Recreation Area From Hwy 72, about 1 mile north of Belfry, turn east Dutch Lane, then right on Silvertip for 9 ish miles. We will have markings on the road too. Google directions from Belfry - it's not K-12 schools but Google doesn't really know what to say about Elk Basin on the Montana side of the border - but that is the spot you'll need to be.
Use Outbound Lighting during the race! We have sets of lighting to rent. The Hangover helmet mount and Evo handlebar mount make a perfect combination to light up the trail - you'll see everything. If you decide to purchase a light, we'll have new onsite and we'll apply the rental fee of $30 and the 15% discount Outbound offers online to our race participants!
Registration - may register onsite but not recommended.
Solo: $150 Race Fee
Duo: $245 Race Fee
4-Person: $400 Race Fee
Carnival: $550 Race Fee
Meals, beverages, swag, discounted participation (if position allows or for another event we host or pass it on to a family or friend!), and fun!!
24 Hours of Elk Basin is brought to you by two Event Directors out of Red Lodge, MT that bring bikes, running, camping, friends and family together for 24 hours of fun! Kristen Hollum, Red Lodge Events and Jennifer Drinkwalter, Montana Tour. We put on other events throughout the year, but this one may be our favorite. We hope to see you out at Elk Basin!
There are no power sources; you are responsible for all of your charging and battery needs.
Elk Basin in the Cottonwood Travel Management Area. The Bureau of Land Management governs these public lands. Directions on found on our Location above.
Camp will be set up based on the number of participants. Spots are limited and additional vehicles must be paid for. We try to group big teams together the best we can.
Please do not arrive to camp before Friday afternoon. If you do, we may ask you to move as we have to secure space for catering trucks, portable toilets, water tanks, stage, start arch and fire pit. Camp maps will be provided.
Before May 1, 2024 a $25 fee per entrant.
Spouse, partners, friends, kids: Yes! If they are traveling in the same vehicle, no problem. They will have to purchase a wristband for meals. Wristbands can be purchased when registering or on site (cash/check/Venmo).
If you're guests are traveling in their own vehicle, they will need to register for a spot, General Fun, and it includes amenities and food.
No. All 24 hour teams can only have one rider/runner on the course at a time. Teammates can take a lap together, but it will only count as one lap. Exceptions may be made for young participants riding/running with their parents.
No. There is definitely not any wi-fi but there are spots in camp and on the course that you can squeak out a bit of cell service to make a call or send a text. We will mark spots on the course and in camp that have reliable service. This will be our primary means of medical communication so please keep your phones on airplane mode when possible.
Official course maps will be send via email. In the meantime, you can find the routes on Strava using the links below as a guide. These are not final courses and should only be used as an idea of the course:
Worry, no. Be aware, yes. Elk Basin, as designated by the BLM, is part of Grizzly Bear Habitat. That being said, we will be taking precautions to ensure our camping are is free of unsecured food or attractants. This is also why we include breakfast and dinner, so we can limit cooking which attracts even smaller animals. This IS rattlesnake country so be aware of the 'nope-ropes' on the trails. Occasionally you may see a deer, antelope or scare up a grouse.
Catered dinner (Saturday) and breakfast (Sunday) are provided. Feel free to bring your own snacks or supplemental food. That being said, no campfires, fire pits, camp stoves or glass are allowed. Elk Basin in now included in Grizzly Bear Habitat so we have to abide by all rules and regulations associated with it and because we're here to hit the trails, we don't want people worrying about the bbq grill left behind. If you have a cooking set up inside your RV or camper, feel free to use that.
We'll also have hydration and nutrition at aid stations and on site to keep you fueled.
We have an e-bike division, so yes, you can use them but your entire team is then in the e-bike division. Please register for the E-bike category in registration (different than Mountain Bike division). Thank you!
Friendly dogs are allowed and you will sign a waiver at check in. PLEASE NOTE - IT WILL BE HOT! BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT TAKING YOUR DOG AND MAKE SURE THEY can handle heat. We HIGHLY recommend not having your dog on the trails during peak heat. If Race Directors deem the day too hot for dog laps, you must adhere to this until they say otherwise. We REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY don't want any dogs dying from heat exhaustion.
Other notes: They must be on leash or have perfect recall. They cannot be left alone in camp or in your car. Dogs cannot be in the food tent area or on the first lap of the race. You are responsible for picking up their poop. We will have two 2 pools around camp. Dog owners should watch out for snakes, cactus, and pad damage due to sandy trails. Remember, not everyone loves your dog, so be respectful and keep your dog with you and under your control at all times. Any problem doggos will be asked to leave and if you have to leave with them, you will not be refunded or credited for the event. *Dog policy in Waiver on Run Sign Up.
Kids of any age can participate in the events as long as they are capable and do not pose a threat to themselves or others while participating. Please consider your child's ability level before signing them up for an event.
Kids under the age of 14 CANNOT BE LEFT UNATTENDED. This is not a free-for-all and there are no babysitters available. This means you cannot leave your kid at the main camping area while you go ride without another adult present in camp to supervise them.
We will host a short race for kids in attendance. Depeneding on ages/abilities the race distance will vary from 0.5-1.5 miles. All kids will get a prize from Crazy Creek. Approximately 7:30 pm Saturday. They are welcome to bring bikes and enjoy the trails that are not being used in the race.
We will have a place to fill water on the course and a water tank in camp to fill water bottles or gallon jugs for drinking. We do not have water for RV or Van hookups. It is dry camping so bring the water you need for your campsite.
Mandatory on course gear:
Other Suggested Gear
One person will be the team captain and register your team. This person will establish a team name and then each person will go in and add their name and sign a waiver by going to registration and selecting the team size to sign up (two, four or carnival) then choose to add onto a team. There is not a charge for the teammates except for carnival teams adding a 7th and 8th person.
There is a big board at the start finish with each team and solo participant on it. After you complete each lap, throw a tick up on the board. We'll have volunteers helping but we go off the honor system. Mixed teams will note if a lap was biking or running. Runners can run the bike lap and have it count for 2 laps.
Awards are held at about 11:30 at the finish arch. Awards are by team size and overall solo awards. Best costume and Average Joe/Jolene awards will be given thanks to our friends at OutBound Lighting.
